Ingredient of the Day: Virgin Coconut Oil
8/16/2010 12:49:58 PM

Only a few oils have been proven to enter the hair shaft. Virgin (unrefined) coconut oil is one of them.

Coconut oil penetrates deeply into the cortex of the hair strand (Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2001), thereby helping to keep the hair strong, moist, and flexible.

This oil has been used for millennia in Africa and Asia for hair care.  It is very popular in India.

With many applications in hair and skin care, coconut oil is a versatile ingredient.  It is an excellent pre-shampoo conditioner because of its protective qualities.  Coconut oil is also a good styling aid. It moisturizes deeply when it is warm and liquefied, but upon cooling in the hair it solidifies a bit and also functions as a styling product.

Always use pure virgin (unrefined) coconut oil (which is solid up to 76 degrees Fahrenheit).  Processed and modified versions of coconut oil (as are often found in salon and retail products) are not as effective and may actually be detrimental.

Search our Recipes section for ideas for your own homemade formulations.  A good one is Wise Ancients' Pre-shampoo Conditioner.

Ingredient of the Day: Helichrysum
8/11/2010 4:21:02 PM

The common names of helichrysum include everlasting, immortelle, and strawflower.

Helichrysum is a powerful tool for regenerating skin.  It is the ingredient of choice for preventing and fading surgical and acne scars, stretch marks, and all kinds of skin wounds.  It is also used in anti-aging and under-eye treatments.

Although it’s expensive, a little goes a long way, especially when it’s used with other botanicals that support tissue repair, such as rosehip seed oil; tamanu oil; sea buckthorn oil; and rosemary, geranium, lavender, sage, and calendula essential oils.

Helichrysum has a very high percentage of di-ketones, rare messengers that signal skin to regenerate.  It is also high in anti-inflammatory sesquiterpenes and tension-relieving esters.

Look for the species Helicyrisum italicum ssp. serotinum, as it considered best for skin applications.
